Located between 10Ί 05' N and 95Ί 18' E in Bogalay Township
of Ayeyawaddy Division. |

4. Access
|
Yangon to Bogalay, 99 miles by riveer launch and Bogalay to
Meinmahla Kyun, 12 miles by small motorboat. |
5. Objectives
|
(a) To protect and conserve degraded mangrove ecosystem from
overexploitation by human.
(b) To preserve remant mangrove foests, consisting of 29 different tree
species, as seed production areas for plantations.
(c) To conserve and manage the are as breeding grounds, particularly, for
fish and prawn.
(d) To implement conservation programmes for protection of resident and
migratory water birds and shore birds and their habitats.
(e) To establish a bird sanctuary for protection of resident and migratory
water birds and shore birds and their habitats.
(f) To upgrade and promote as an ecotourism with attraction onmangrove
conservation activities, research activities on estuarine crocodiles and
bird watching.
(g) To establish area creatively as an environmental education centre for
local people. |
6. Forest / Vegetative Types
|
Mangrove species such as Kanazo, Madama, Thame, Thayaw,
Kambala, Thinbaung, etc, are present. |
7. Wildlife
|
Otter, sambar, hog deer, wild boar, crab-eating kra, wild
dog, turtles and tortoises, estuarine crocodiles, fish, prawn, crab and 34
bird species are known to occur in the area and Ayeyarwaddy Dolphin is said
to occur occasionally in the area. |
8.Conservation,Development and Research Programmes

(a) Conservation of mangrove ecosystem.
(b) Implementation of conservation of mangrove forests with natural
regeneration practices.
(c) Conservation of mangrove forests with natural regeneration practices.
(d) Re-introduction of esturarine crocodiles, after nursing the young brood
in the research centre, to increase their population.
(d) Implementation of environmental education activities.
(f) Construction of wooden tracks in the forests. |
9. Opportunities for Study and Recreation

(a) Study on mangrove ecosystem.
(b) Study and research on mangrove conservation with the practice of natural
regeneration method.
(c) Bird watching.
(d) Study on behavior of wildlifeincluding reptiles, mammals and aquatic
animals.
(e) Study on the egg-laying of marine turtle at Kadonlay nesting beach : 10
miles away from the sanctuary, during November to January
(f) Conducting of socio-economic survey on local people seaside.
(g) Accommodation for 6 persons at Bogalay, 5 persons at Meinmahla kyun and
5 persons at a guard post in the sanctuary. |
